The bras are pointy, car fenders are pointy, and the language is pointedly sexist. It's quite telling -- and somewhat amusing -- that in one of Shine a Light's archival interview segments Mick Jagger, only two years into The Rolling Stones recording career, predicted that the band may go on for only another year. Over forty years later, The Rolling Stones are still around, and still selling out concert venues (and movie theatres, as the case may be). In Shine a Light director Martin Scorsese documents the band on their 2006 "A Bigger Bang" tour, during the second of a two-night stay at New York City's legendary Beacon Theatre.

The Ganga River, or Ganges, the most revered river on the Indian subcontinent, originates after the confluence of six tributaries -- the Alaknanda, the Dhauliganga, the Nandakini, the Pindar, Mandankini, and what is considered the source stream from the pristine waters of the Gangotri Glacier at an elevation of 7,756m (25,446 ft.) -- in the high peaks of the Himalayas where, from its very beginning, it brings forth an abundance of sustenance for humans and animals. Langurs (leaf monkeys), musk deer (prized by the pharmaceutical and perfume industries) and snow leopards mingle near the waters of the Ganges as it plunges through the foothills of the Himalayas and then across the Gangetic plains.

The river flows eastward across northern India, passing through some of the most populous cities on the subcontinent, such as Bengal and Calcutta. During its journey across the vast expanse of grasslands on its way towards the delta, particularly during the long monsoon season, the Ganges is responsible for bringing the riches of a fertile soil in the form of huge quantities of sediment it lays across the land. Farmers, whose main crops are a rotation of rice, wheat and millet, enjoy the abundance of mineral rich mud brought down by the powerful body of water, as do mudskippers, wild boar, Indian elephants, makak monkeys and many other animals along the way.

In our workaday lives, we go about the dreary tasks of our daily routines, hardly lending a thought to this sphere, this big blue planet at the edge of the Milky Way we call home - the Earth. Seven billion people scratching out humble and not so humble existences; we laugh, we cry. Some manage to stumble into that one person out of seven billion that makes their lives on this rock complete and perhaps worth carrying on. What most of us seem to do, however, is to take for granted that delicate balance that makes it all possible -- the cycle of life, the forces that drive our planet and make it habitable for us all -- until someone or something comes along every so often to remind us of the majesty and rarity of it all.

Jason Statham shows new range in this old-school caper film that takes him back to his own cinematic roots. The kind of stunts and martial arts we saw from Statham in films like "Transporter" are out, and the classic heist structure from "The Italian Job," "The Thomas Crown Affair" and countless other films is in, where the emphasis is on the recruitment of the crooks, the plan, the grab, and the inevitable getaway or unraveling. Though "The Bank Job" isn't nearly as convoluted as Statham's first film, "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" (also coincidentally a heist film of sorts), Statham seems to have reached a new comfort zone as Terry Leather. This guy has two mindsets--business and pleasure--and he isn't as concerned about bravado as previous Statham heroes were. You get the feeling that he's vulnerable, and Statham is able to convey that without sacrificing any of the Bond coolness or ringleader calculation.

It's an amusing film, but its jokes don't deliver the usual one-two punch one gets from classic comedies. It was "SNL" star Mike Myers first non-SNL related film and his first headlined vehicle without a co-headliner. The film follows a young '90s yuppie hipster (Myers) as he falls in love with the attractive local butcher (Travis), only to discover that she may or may not be an axe-wielding murder who's offered numerous husbands prior to tying the knot with our love-struck hero.

Many critics have lashed out against “Cloverfield” simply because of how the film was shot. Akin to the style that director Paul Greengrass (”The Bourne Ultimatum“) shoots his film, at first the style of shooting was a bit distracting and annoying (I shut off the film 10 minutes into it and had to come back at a later time). But once I sat down again and actually watched the whole movie, I have no problem admitting that I was completely hooked by everything in front of me. The decision to tell the story from the perspective of Hud was excellent as each and every movement made by the group felt like I was there. Their screams and emotions were made more personal as it seemed that everything occurring was something that was happening to one of our friends. Kind of like a home video.

The Movie Itself is based on the novel by Steven Gould, originally adapted into screenplay by David S. Goyer, Jim Uhls, Simon Kinberg and Directed by Doug Liman. The whole plot to this film involves the possibility of teleportation — being able to “teleport” or jump to one place or time at an instant. The story revolves around a boy named “David Rice” who in early teenage years (played by Max Thieriot) escapes a ‘near death experience’ of drowning by… teleporting to his local library. Yes, I know that sounds absolutely nuts in print which makes me wonder how David S. Goyer who originally worked on the first draft of the screenplay adaption of this novel decided to word that statement I just made — about ‘escaping to the library.’ Anyway, the explanation is that he has these mysterious powers that allow him to teleport to anywhere he wants which he’s explaining to us now in voice-over Narration at this point in the film.
The Movie Itself is Written / Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and based on the Novel “OIL!” by Upton Sinclair. The film’s main character “Daniel Plainview” is played by Daniel Day-Lewis who won the “Academy Award” for Best Actor this year — for this role. The story tells that of Daniel Plainview who we get to know from the first 15 minutes of the film — as it contains no dialogue. We see him first working alone in what appears to be a mine searching for oil but instead finding silver, working with a small crew on his first oil rig endeavors, designing an oil “derrick” and eventually striking it rich when he hits oil. From this we’re fast forwarded a few years and find Daniel and his son “H.W.” (played by Dillon Freasier) talking to a group of people about drilling for oil in their town. Daniel is a very smooth talking and intelligent man which comes across very early on from scenes like these but at the same time he’s got somewhat of a dark side too. One day while Plainview, son H.W. and his assistant are sitting having dinner a boy by the name of “Paul Sunday” (played by Paul Dano) shows up asking what kind of “finder’s fee” he can get for leading Plainview to some land that he knows has oil.

Director Robert Wise was so proud of this film that he hosted cast and crew reunions from time to time. And it is an achievement in filmmaking--an old-Hollywood story like “Dr. Zhivago,” in which personal lives get caught up in an epic drama of social change. Steve McQueen stars as a Navy mechanic named Holman, who’s assigned to the U.S.S. San Pablo (or “The Sand Pebbles,” as the crew and their coolie doubles call it). In pre-revolutionary 1929 China, this ship has found itself in a peculiar state of operations. Chinese locals originally brought onboard to do small jobs have managed to all but take over every job on the ship, each boss coolie having other coolies who work under him while the U.S. sailors supervise. It’s a system newcomer Holman tries to buck, but he has as much of a chance doing that as the gunboat has of negotiating suddenly treacherous straits. As a nationalist movement fuels anti-American demonstrations, the captain (Richard Crenna) orders the ship upriver to make its customary display of a U.S. military presence. But personal dramas intertwine with the revolution that’s rolling in like a menacing storm. One of the crew (Richard Attenborough in a warm and tender role as Frenchy) has fallen hard for a “fresh” prostitute named Maily (Marayat Andriane), and in strangely parallel fashion Holman has drawn quite close to the coolie he was forced to train (Mako as Po-han). Their fates play out against this “Go Home Yankees” backdrop.

"Patton" earned 10 Academy Award nominations, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Art/Set Decoration, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. There was no nomination for Best Actress, though, because the only women in this 1970 film are lineless nurses scuttling about and a correspondent briefly doing her job. Yet, if there's a war film aside from a romantic affair like "From Here to Eternity" that will appeal to women as well as men, it's this one. That's because the focus is on the man himself, rather than war, and Patton's determination to win comes across in much the same way as it might in a sports biopic or one of the old biographies of musicians or scientists. In every case, the underlying question that hooks us is the same: What is it that makes a flawed but great person the stuff of history, rather than an ordinary wayfarer in life like the rest of us? That question is so much a part of "Patton" that even at 172 minutes the film never seems to drag.

There had been so much talk about a possible Blu-ray of "Lawrence of Arabia" that it's almost a surprise that "A Passage to India" becomes the first David Lean film to make it to the new format. At 164 minutes, "Passage" is about as lean as the director's epics get--far shorter than "Lawrence" (216 minutes) and "Doctor Zhivago" (197 minutes), and only moments longer than "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (161 minutes). But none of these films feels interminably long, and that's because Lean has an uncanny ability to mesmerize audiences with the landscape and local life, while offering characters so complex and richly drawn that they also command our attention.

Though only first-time screenwriter Cody won an Oscar, this warm, witty, and winning comedy about teen pregnancy disarmed audiences who thought they knew what to expect from an indie film about teens and the ultimate teen problem. But instead of teen angst, they got a story that was more funny and witty than it was sentimental or dramatic, and a film that steered clear of clichés while delivering an elevated style of quirkiness wrapped in a story that still seemed organic and authentic.....
Now, this live-action and CGI film brings "Alvin and the Chipmunks" to a third generation. Forget what you've heard from cranky critics. "Ice Age" was a genuine surprise for me. The Blu Sky produced, 20th Century Fox film wasn’t the classy CG comedy you've come to expect from Pixar or Disney films, but it was pretty funny in its own right.

Geared more for adults, rather than kids, "Ice Age" is certainly not what most expected. It’s closer to the Dreamworks animation-based films like "Shrek" instead of "Monster's Inc." or "The Incredibles" (though "The Incredibles" is sort of geared for adults as well).
It all starts with a strong concept. What a great idea it is to have a cartoon princess pushed into a well by a witch who sends her to a place where the hag thinks there are no happily ever afters: New York City. And so with her Prince and one of her forest friends trailing, Giselle (Amy Adams) finds herself being forced to take a bite out of the Big Apple. The first fully animated portion of the film is shot in a letterboxed 1.85:1 to give the appearance of the old 1.33:1 classics, while the minute Giselle comes up through a manhole cover in the middle of Times Square and everything turns to live-action, the ratio switches to 2.35:1.
Adams, who was equally unflappable and cheery in "Junebug," lays it on appropriately thick in this romantic comedy, which takes quite a few liberties with fairy tale conventions.......

Just a little over ten years ago, "Gattaca" arrived in theaters with much anticipation and critical acceptance behind it. Sadly, the film didn't end up being the hit that producers thought, and hoped, it would be. However, when the film it video, it became an immediate cult hit generating countless late night debates among thousands of young college students and scholars alike. It send cold shivers down the spine of the scientific community. It's been quoted and discussed among geneticists as the best possible view of where genetic tampering could go horribly wrong. Molecular biologist Lee M. Silver even went on record saying that "Gattaca is a film that all geneticists should see if for no other reason than to understand the perception of our trade held by so many of the public-at-large."
Synopsis

Tim Burton's fascination with strangeness finds a perfect outlet in this modern-day fairy tale, which is a simple yet complex story that can be "read" a number of ways. It's a wonderful example of magic realism, in which a single magical element (in this case, a Goth-looking lad who has cutlery for hands) enters into an otherwise realistic tale that is narrated with matter-of-factness. But "Edward Scissorhands" is also a modern reworking of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," with Vincent Price playing the inventor who creates a life that suffers consequences because of his miscalculations.
Most of all, though, Burton's film is a wonderful commentary on suburbia.

Johnny Depp gives a stellar performance as a Goth lad who's rescued by a perky Avon lady (Dianne Wiest) and brought to live in the midst of identical houses and their inhabitants' all-but-identical lives. It's an offbeat love story as well, since the Avon lady's daughter (Winona Ryder) eventually comes to care about the weirdo who's punctured her water bed. And it's a tale of celebrity, as the neighborhood women who gush over Edward's topiaries and haircuts lead to his 15 minutes of fame that Andy Warhol promised, and the inevitable fall from grace, which finally finds the peasants reaching for their torches and pitchforks. Through it all, the performances are wonderfully understated, and Burton's vision is supported by a production design that highlights the many themes. It's a poignant story, made more so by the sad fact that this was Vincent Price's last film.

Video Quality

"Edward Scissorhands" looks better than it ever has, but that said, it's not a showcase for Blu-ray. There's a lot of visual "noise" and a slight graininess throughout, especially in the outdoor scenes with hazy light. But in close-ups you can see a great amount of detail, and the black levels seem appropriate to the pastel palette. It's clearer than the DVD, that's for sure, but "Edward Scissorhands" doesn't appear to have been remastered especially for the Blu-ray release. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1.

Audio Quality

Fox has been going with DTS-HD, and this one has a 4.0 Master Lossless that does the job. Personally, I think PCM is the stronger soundtrack, but this one has a nice balance of treble and bass, as well as a pleasing timbre and an okay spread across the main speakers. The rear effects speakers don't exactly get a workout, but much of the film is dialogue anyway.

Bonus Features

The only thing missing from the 10th Anniversary DVD is a photo gallery that I didn't think was terribly essential. Otherwise, both the commentary track by Tim Burton and one by Danny Elfman are here, as is a brief featurette that feels more like a pre-release promo. Neither Burton nor Elfman is much of a chatterbox, and there are long pauses that make you forget you've got the commentary track on. I'd rate them average at best, and personally would have preferred interviews.

Tru-Blu?

Absolutely. Though the HD quality isn't as strong as on more current releases, Burton's vision of individuality and suburban dystopia makes for a classic film-one of his best-and with Depp's bravura performance, Wiest's dead-on soccer mom parody, and Price's curtain call, "Edward Scissorhands" seems a must-have for any Blu-ray collection.
The Movie Itself is the work of famous Hollywood Producer Joel Silver, Director Oliver Hirschbiegel and the Screenplay written by David Kajganich. It’s their new modern take on the classic Science Fiction novel “The Body Snatchers” by Jack Finney. Over the years there have been many great film adaptations of this such as the 1956 original “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” or the 1978 remake. This new take on the story follows the life of a woman named “Carol Bennell” (played by Nicole Kidman) who is a psychiatrist in the Washington, DC area. This takes obvious influence from the original novel with the main character being a Doctor but this time it’s a woman. Carol has a young son named “Oliver” (played by Jackson Bond) who she has split custody over with her ex-husband “Tucker Kaufman” (played by Jeremy Northam).

With her work as a psychiatrist she encounters many people complaining of the same thing, their loved ones aren’t themselves anymore. This sudden outbreak happens after a Space Shuttle named “Patriot” crashes on re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere leaving wreckage across a wide range of the United States. I’d like to point out this is obviously inspired by the “Columbia” Shuttle disaster that was very similar to this back in February 2003. They also use tie-ins with the sudden outbreak explaining it as a “New Flu” (very similar to the “Bird Flu” or “SARs” that were headlining in news as well in the past years). These influences of our modern fears and disasters make it that much more scary and believable I guess when you realize as the viewer...
It's been a long while since a decent sci-fi film has graced the megaplexes. I'm not talking about mainstream sci-fi like "Star Wars" or "Transformers", but a thinking-man's sci-fi movie--films like "2001" and, to some extent, Ridley Scott's "Alien." Last year, writer/director Darren Aronofsky attempted, in some ways, to bring back heady sci-fi with "The Fountain", but the result was a mish-mash of pretentious and preposterous ideas marred even further by a story that thought it was smarter than what it was. It was a huge disappointment for me as I had longed to see that film and had hoped it would be a visual and intellectual delight.

Thankfully, Danny Boyle's "Sunshine" fulfills the promises that "The Fountain" had made, but failed to provide. "Sunshine" is a scary, tense, visual treat, awakening almost every sense of the viewers body while at the same time, opening the mind intellectually. The film follows several astronauts as they attempt to reignite the sun. On their journey they must take on the dark halves of themselves while facing the enormous challenge of saving the entire planet.
The Movie Itself: Our Reviewer's Take

Although it was derided by critics and die-hard comic fans alike as one of the worst Hollywood adaptations ever, 2005's 'Fantastic Four' hit the bull's-eye with the mainstream, grossing over $325 million worldwide.

Not being much of a comic book fan, I personally enjoyed 'Fantastic Four' quite a bit. Of course, I was the film's target audience -- the kind of clueless moviegoer too ignorant of the comic's origin to realize that it was a bastardization. Still, taken on its own terms 'Fantastic Four' was lighthearted, dim-witted fun, and a refreshing change of pace from all the morose comic book adaptations of late. Don't get me wrong, I love 'Batman Begins,' but do all superheroes have to be manic-depressive, anti-social, borderline suicidal freak shows?
It all started as a joke. Comic artist Kevin Eastman wanted to parody industry favorites like "Daredevil," "The New Mutants," "Cerebus," and "Ronin," so he drummed up some money and self-published a single issue release of the tongue-in-cheek "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in 1984. Almost overnight, his creation gave birth to an animated television series, a line of toys and a comic series. By the time the television series had run its course in the early '90s, an entire generation of kids had taken Eastman's joke very seriously.

And even twenty years after the fact, the turtles have yet to fall by the way side. In the years since their debut, there have been a successful series of live action films, new action figures released on a regular basis, and even a recent TV reboot. The latest offshoot of this profitable juggernaut came in the form of 'TMNT,' a feature length CG animated film helmed by rookie writer/director Kevin Munroe.

Director: Stephen Chow; Stars Stephen Chow, Xiaogang Feng, Wah Yuen, Kwok Kuen Chan, Qiu Yuen and Sheng Yi Huang

SRP $28.95

Synopsis

When I first saw this film, I was blown away by its quirkiness and outrageous blend of comedy and martial arts. There were so many Warner Brothers cartoon allusions thrown in that it felt a little bit like a cinematic tour de force.

Like the spaghetti westerns of old, where streets clear when a gang shows up on the edge of town and walks to its center, looking for trouble, the formally-dressed Axe Gang turns up en masse, ready to kill, maim, or dazzle you with dance steps at the drop of a hat. In westerns, you could always tell the bad guys by their black hats. In Kung Fu Hustle, it's black teeth.
The crocodile cowboy-booted and Stetson-wearing boss of the Crocodile Gang has conspicuously rotten teeth, and so does Big Brother Sum (Kwok Kuen Chan), the boss of the Axe Gang. But just when you think this is going to be another gang vs. gang film, the Axe Gang makes short work of their rivals early in the film and does a celebratory dance (parents, be warned, there's some pretty graphic violence, and the dancing makes it all the more casual).
Kung Fu Hustle really turns out to be the saga of a street rat named Sing (director Chow) who, with his sidekick (Chi Chung Lam), yearns to be a member of the Axe Gang. Who wouldn't want to be? he muses. These guys are sharp dressers, they have money, and they get the girls. And you can't beat those signature flares that they fire off, beaming an illuminated axe in the sky (rather than Batman's famous bat symbol). The rest of the film follows their misadventures as they try to join the gang, then beat the gang--with a hair-in-curlers landlady emerging as a comic masterpiece.

Video Quality

If you run side-by-side comparisons with the standard DVD, you'll see an appreciable improvement with Blu-ray. This is especially noticeable in the title and end credits, where the lettering looks ragged on the standard disc and so much sharper on Blu-ray. Black levels might not be as strong as in some releases--same with the color saturation--but the level of detail is very strong.

Bonus Features

Director Chow is joined on the commentary track by the actors who played the sidekick, Axe Gang leader, and Axe Gang advisor. Together, they have a high-kicking good time of it, with plenty of laughter--although there's not much in the way of analysis. The best of the extras is a loose-but-intelligent interview with Chow that feels like a real conversation, rather than an interrogation. There's also a behind-the-scenes TV special that's worth watching, as is a short blooper reel that's fascinating because it's the only document on this disc that shows the work that actors did with ropes. The only feature missing from the standard DVD is a poster gallery.

Tru-Blue?

Kung Fu Hustle won't be everyone's cup of Chai. Some will be unsettled by the violence or the odd insertion of dance and cartoon elements. But Kung Fu Hustle was the highest grossing film in the history of Hong Kong cinema, and it's easy too see why. It's flat-out crazy. Put this Blu-ray on when you want to laugh out loud.

Thank god for the law of diminished expectations. After 'Perfect Stranger' received scathing reviews during its blink-or-you-missed-it theatrical run this past spring, I went into this review fully expecting this film to be a disaster of epic proportions. And to be sure, this is not a good movie -- in fact, it's rather crappy. But to my great surprise, I still found 'Perfect Stranger' bizarrely enjoyable in a chintzy, Sunday-afternoon rental kind of way.

Halle Berry stars as Rowena Price, an investigative reporter whose friend's affair with married ad exec Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis) ends in murder. Suspecting Hill of the crime, Rowena goes undercover with the help of her cyber-geek accomplice Miles Haley (Giovanni Ribisi), posing as two highly alluring women: Katherine, a sexy temp who works within Hill's agency, and Veronica, a seductive temptress he chats up online. Engaging in a dangerous game of virtual cat-and-mouse, ultimately both Rowena and Hill come to realize things may not be what they seem -- and that the real killer may not be who anyone suspected.

When 'Weeds' debuted on Showtime in 2005, it told the tale of a suburban housewife named Nancy (Mary Louise Parker) who was hurled into a financial crisis after her husband died. The debt dropped on her shoulders seemed insurmountable until she discovered the untapped market for marijuana in her community. Season one followed this newly single mother as she worked to keep her family afloat, hide her extracurricular activities from her best friend Celia (Elizabeth Perkins), and boost pot sales among clients like her city councilman Doug (Kevin Nealon). As she developed her business, she got help from her brother-in-law Andy (Justin Kirk), a supplier named Heylia (Tonye Patano), and Heylia's nephew Conrad (Romany Malco).

'Weeds: Season Two' picks up where we left off by focusing on the cliffhanger from season one -- it seems Nancy's boyfriend is a DEA agent. At the same time, Nancy attempts to begin growing her own product. Complicating matters are a series of twists and turns that leave their mark on every character: Nancy's two sons become more aware of her new job; one of her sons gets a girl pregnant; Andy may have to go overseas and join the war; Doug loses his councilman seat to Celia; and the town is converted into a "drug free zone".

Three million dollars generally doesn't buy much in Hollywood. Stretching every dime, you might be able to get a low-grade name actor, a basic crew, and a backlot director -- if you're lucky. But give three million dollars to a guy working at T.G.I. Friday's and these limitations apparently no longer apply. Three million was all it took for rookie writer/director Rob McKittrick to turn a script he wrote (while waiting tables) into a trendy indie comedy that caught the attention of male adolescents across the country. 'Waiting' has an impressive ensemble cast and a solid cinema aesthetic -- but is this little-indie-that-could worth your time?
Dean (Justin Long) has been stuck in the same job since high school, waiting tables at a local theme restaurant called Shenaniganz. While his co-worker Monty (Ryan Reynolds) has accepted the hope-numbing fact that he's in for the long haul, Dean dreams of bigger and better things, so he finds himself at a crossroads when he's offered an assistant manager position at the restaurant -- should he get out while he can, or sell his soul to Shenaniganz and its manager, Dan (David Koechner)? Aside from this central dilemma, the film is also peppered with tales of constant conflict between the kitchen staff (Luis Guzman, Dane Cook and Chi McBride among others) and the waiters (Anna Faris, Jordan Ladd, and Rob Benedict), a wide-eyed trainee (John Francis Daley) who's introduced to the behind-the-scenes eccentricities of a restaraunt, and an ongoing battle with an endless wave of rude and arrogant customers.

I can vividly recall being ten years-old and watching the first, historic mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia on television. The date was April 12, 1981, and it was the first live launch of a spacecraft I'd ever witnessed. My reaction of awe and wonder was, I'm sure, similar to those who watched the original moon landing back in 1969. There is something universally out-of-body about the very concept of space travel that's incomparable to anything else. The sheer act of mere mortals breaking the barriers of our earthy world to explore the cosmos is, arguably, the closest we can get to God without going to heaven itself.

Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) is a publicist, but he spends more time on himself than his group of clients. He makes calls, sends faxes, and conducts in person visits, but he only helps his clients to further his own ends. Such is the nature of business, but Stu lies more than he should and in the case of one client, he puts his own marriage on the line. The one call he makes on a public phone instead of his cellular phone, to keep his wife in the dark, is to this client and she is Pam McFadden (Katie Holmes), a beautiful young actress. Stu even removes his wedding band when he calls Pam, as she has no idea that he is married and if Stu has his way, she will never learn the truth about his personal life. He calls from the same phone booth each day, to talk with her and get her to meet him at a hotel. But after he hangs up the phone on this day, it rings again and this time, its not a beautiful young woman on the other end. The voice belongs to an unknown man in a building nearby, who is holding a high powered rifle aimed right at Stu. If he doesn't do as the sniper demands, Stu will be shot dead, as has happened to several others. The sniper even shoots a man trying to force Stu out of the booth, which causes the police to arrive. Can Stu manage to escape this situation alive, or will the sniper have the final say in the matter?

Let's take a trip back to the Summer of 1990, shall we? Not a whole lot was different "back then", George Bush was president and we were at war with Iraq. Film-wise, movies like "Ghost", "Days of Thunder" , "Dick Tracy" and "Total Recall" were hits at the box office and a little movie called "Flatliners" had a great cast of some fairly new, fresh faces. Yes, we'd seen Kiefer Sutherland in previous movies like "Stand by Me" and "The Lost Boys" but who was this other Baldwin brother? Little did we know there was yet another (Stephen). Julia Roberts was coming off her Spring-time box office success of "Pretty Woman" and wouldn't you know it, she and Kiefer Sutherland were an item. Yep, before Brad and Angelina (and Brad and Gweyneth), Bennifer and TomKat, there was Kiefer and Julia. Naturally they didn't last, but the on-screen chemistry is there, to be sure. Enough about the cast, though I have neglected to mention Kevin Bacon and this movie certainly helped his "Six Degrees" stature. The idea behind the film is this: "Can you cheat death to see what's on the other side?"
He has lost his wife, but still has several children to tend to and has no intentions of leaving them fatherless. But his oldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger) wants to be right on the front lines and enlists even without his father's consent. Soon Gabriel returns home, though this time he is wounded and is mere hours in front of a massive battle. The battle spills right into the Martin's property and when morning comes, the cruel Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) of the English army arrives and orders the death of Gabriel for carrying papers to American forces. As if that wasn't enough, Tavington also kills a younger son when he tries to intervene and this drives Benjamin over the edge. He soon rallies his remaining sons, takes arms, and heads out to free Gabriel. After this mission works, he joins up with the American forces and works to amass a civilian team to hold off the English forces until the French arrive. But this is a personal mission as well and by the time the war ends, either Benjamin or Tavington will be dead by the other's hand.

Writer/director Craig Brewer's hip-hop drama 'Hustle & Flow' might well be called "the little movie that could." Seemingly plucked from obscurity to debut at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, the critically-praised film enjoyed a surprisingly strong theatrical run, and went on to earn a scad of award nods (including, most famously, an Oscar win for the Three 6 Mafia song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp").

The film itself focuses on a hard-working pimp named DJay (Terrence Howard), who finds himself in the midst of a mid-life crisis. As the city street corners become more and more dangerous, he can't help but feel that he was meant to do something greater in life. And so, with the help of his sound technician friend Key (Anthony Anderson), DJay begins to lay down rap tracks in the hopes of impressing a famous hip-hop artist coming to town named Skinny Black (Ludacris). Along the way, he'll also receive help from two hookers in his employ (Taraji P. Henson and Taryn Manning), and a mixer friend of Key's named Shelby (D.J. Qualls).
By 1987, Brian De Palma had toiled for two decades in the lucrative (but critically derided) "ghetto" of low-and mid-budget genre filmmaking -- directing such films as 'Sisters,' 'Dressed to Kill,' 'Blow Out' and 'Scarface.' But while many of his films generated their fair share of attention, none were particularly profitable by Hollywood standards, and most were widely derided by critics as being far-too-derivative of Alfred Hitchcock.

So when Paramount announced it had signed De Palma to helm 'The Untouchables,' the news was met with more than a few raised eyebrows -- not only was De Palma an unproven choice for such a big-budgeted epic, but the political cynicism of his earlier works ('Blow Out' and 'Scarface' being prime examples) seemed out of whack with this most American of stories, set to be produced at the height of Reagan-era patriotism.
How does an up-and-coming director follow a breakout flick about a middle-aged pimp with career aspirations of hip-hop superstardom? Apparently with a controversial landmine of a film that juggles issues of race, abuse, addiction, and morality. Loosely based on a George Eliot novel from the 1860s ("Silas Marner"), writer/director Craig Brewer's second film (after his critically acclaimed 'Hustle & Flow') is an unusual film, to say the least.

'Black Snake Moan' tells the story of Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson), a religious blues musician whose wife runs off with his brother. Stuck in a tailspin, Lazarus withdraws from his tight-knit community and attempts to deal with his wife's betrayal at the bottom of a bottle. After a heavy night of drinking, he wakes up to find a young woman named Rae (Christina Ricci) lying alongside the road, beaten and left for dead. He nurses her back to health, but soon discovers that she's a nymphomaniac with an abusive past who can't control her sexual urges. Chaining her to a radiator in his house, he decides to cure her of her "sickness" with his Bible and a stern bout of tough love.

Werewolf movies have been quite en vogue since "Underworld" electrified theaters in 2003. The genre had been in a slight upswing before Kate Beckinsale showed how well she could fit into a leather outfit. "Underworld" wasn´t a great film, but it was the female empowerment werewolf equivalent of Wesley Snipe´s "Blade" series. It was only a matter of time before a real stinker in the werewolf genre found light of day and set the entire sub-genre of the fantasy horror genre back into darkness. "Blood & Chocolate" is exactly that film. Director Katja von Garnier had not had much work before the film and leading actress Agness Bruckner had previously done a lot of work in television, but not in cinema. One could chalk "Blood & Chocolate" off to a rookie experience for all involved. However, that would just be trying to make an excuse for this dreadful film.
Loosely inspired by the infamous battle that was responsible for nearly 100,000 American casualties and was the last major push by the German forces during World War II, Annakin´s picture features a number of familiar faces. Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Telly Savalas and Charles Bronson are all big stars in their time. Shaw is one of the film´s principal characters, as is Henry Fonda´s character, but Telly Savalas has a supporting role with Charles Bronson not appearing for more than a couple scenes. The picture is heavily maligned by military buffs for its gross inaccuracies. The military hardware, camouflage schemes, geographical features of Bastogne and Ardennes and the factors in the Allied victory during the Battle of the Bulge are all incorrect throughout the film.

Hitting theaters hot on the heels of Eddie Murphy's string of mid-eighties blockbusters, 'Coming to America' reunited Murphy with his 'Trading Places' director John Landis, and paired the comic actor with the then-emerging comedian Arsenio Hall for this 1988 fish-out-of-water comedy. Nearly twenty years on, it may not be as enduring a film as 'Trading Places,' but it is still a fun and endearing flick, and one that clearly set the stage for Murphy's later shape-shifting roles in films like 'The Nutty Professor' and 'Norbit.'

Raimunda (Penelope Cruz) and her sister Sole (Lola Duenas) have been without their mother since she perished in a fire, but they were close with an aunt. When their aunt dies, the sisters attend the funeral and hear rumors that their mother has been seen, which of course has them on edge. Back from the funeral, Sole opens the trunk of her car and discovers her mother Irene (Carmen Maura) inside. Of course this is a shock, but she takes her in and tells her neighbors she is an immigrant, as Irene doesn't want Raimunda to know she is still alive.

There is long-standing theory in Hollywood that the more fun the filmmakers have making a movie, the less fun the audience will have watching it. Particularly in the case of comedies, it would seem to ring true -- how many times have you watched a so-called laugh riot that just felt out-of-control, with the actors flailing their arms all about and screaming one-liners at each other to no avail? It may have been one big party on the set, but it's nothing but headache-inducing when projected on a big screen fifty feet wide.
In 2005, the channel introduced a new series called 'Weeds' that was equal parts quirky family dramedy and surreal morality tale. As it prepares to launch its third season in August of 2007, the show debuts on Blu-ray with this release of the series' first ten episodes.

Clint Eastwood has no desire to retire from Hollywood. In his advancing years, the veteran actor and director has decided to spend more time behind the camera than in front of it. Eastwood will make an exception and return to acting if one of his films contains a role he feels perfectly suited for. 2004´s "Million Dollar Baby" is one such film and the last time that Eastwood has stepped in front of the camera. "Million Dollar Baby" took home Best Picture and captured yet another Best Director Academy Award nomination, following "Mystic River," "Unforgiven," and precluding "Letters from Iwo Jima." As was the case with "Unforgiven," Eastwood brought home the Oscar for Best Director for "Million Dollar Baby" and helped further his legacy as one of Hollywood´s truly great talents.

Implausible. I can´t think of a better word to sum up the plot of Clint Eastwood´s geriatric astronaut epic "Space Cowboys." Produced, directed by and starring a then seventy year old Eastwood, a fifty four year old Tommy Lee Jones, a sixty five year old incarnation of Donald Sutherland and James Garner the eldest at seventy two years of age during filming, "Space Cowboys" veteran actors provided entertainment, but the film´s lackluster and completely implausible storyline bogged down the seemingly longer 130 minute film. Clint Eastwood has had his hits and misses behind the camera and for each success like "Unforgiven" or "Million Dollar Baby," there is an unsuccessful film like "Space Cowboys" or "Blood Work."

The film was given the greenlight with a healthy seventy five million dollar budget. When Pitt and Aronofsky disagreed on script changes that Pitt had demanded, he left the project and "The Fountain" was put on the shelf. Four years later, Aronofsky pieced together his personal project that he penned and found a replacement for Pitt in Australian Hugh Jackman and British beauty Rachel Weisz.

I had known of Michael Douglas from the two Jack Coltrane films, "Romancing the Stone" and "Jewel of the Nile." I had also known that a crazy blonde woman had stewed his rabbit in another film. "Black Rain" didn´t have Harrison Ford or any other stars that I followed at that time, but Michael Douglas seemed cool enough and I knew that Ridley Scott made great films. In my mind, "Black Rain" would find "Blade Runner" in Japan and instead of chasing down superhuman clones; the hero would be going after the Yakuza.
